Background
SOL.MAR. Holding took over Nuova Solmine SpA from the Italian ENI Group in 1996.
Through continuous development under the family-run group, Nuova Solmine is now the leader in the sulphuric acid and oleum sector in Italy and thus an important player in Europe.
In addition to Nuova Solmine, the group has also diversified into other business areas, such as the distribution of diluted sulphuric acid for various markets, cleaning agents, or in the wine and tourism sectors.
At the Scarlino site (Tuscany), they produce sulphuric acid and oleum in various quality grades and distribute them by sea and rail, among other things. The production capacity for sulphuric acid is about 550,000 t per year. Sulphuric acid is used as a raw material in a wide variety of industries. For example, in plastics, pigments, surface treatment, or fertiliser and battery production. But also, in pharmaceutical and food production.
In addition, a sulphuric acid and sulphur recycling plant is operated at the Serravalle-Scrivia site (Piedmont). Equipped with rotary and static furnaces, solids containing sulphur are recycled here. The plant is of strategic importance for the industry. Due to the diverse and quantitatively significant use of sulphuric acid, the sustainable recycling capacities for H2SO4 in Europe are severely limited.
